Afternoon Tea at Chanorny Lodge

Just back from the afternoon tea held at the principal’s place, Chanonry Lodge. This place belongs to the university, and every principal stays in here during the time of incumbency, like the White House to Obama. I’m not sure whether this principal used to be the former governor of Hong Kong, or is he a new one just elected for I remembered there was an inauguration ceremony last month…Well, just googled and found the answer. The former governor is the Chancellor while the principal is the vice Chancellor of the university. They are two different men. What a shame that I’ve been here for over two months yet still have no idea about who’s who of the people running the university. The afternoon tea was arranged by the alumnus association along with the international society to welcome international students. Most members from alumnus committee are senior citizens and very nice people as well. They walked around and started conversations with people to make sure that nobody was left alone or felt uneasy. I also learned something when talking with different people, like Gaelic is a language spoken by people in the west part of Scotland and highlands, not the east coast where we are, and if you imagine that you are being lifted by a thread “Alexander’s Thread” on your head, you’ll keep your back straightened instead of humped, but you need to remind yourself all the time…interesting, isn’t it.

The president of the Alumnus association is a nice old man who used to study in the Medical school of Aberdeen University. I think I must have misheard ‘study’ for ‘teach’ for later a gentleman said that he should have been a private medical practitioner instead of a teaching staff, or maybe the president misheard me the other way round as I asked whether he used to teach in the University, because I thought he was the principal at the beginning…I didn’t even know who was holding this tea party when I was there in person…. oh well, this is exactly the way I am, which is bad, which I hope could be changed, hopelessly. Hopefully my misunderstanding didn’t bring any rumor as the gentleman suspected that the president told me this by himself. If so, that would be too bad. But that shouldn’t be a big deal I guess. Anyway…

I also heard that the Marischal College, which partly belongs to our university and is the second largest granite building in the world as well, is under refurbishment and that will take another two to three years, which means our graduation ceremony won’t be able to take place there, instead, it will be held in Elphinstein Hall. It’s a pity, though.

It was windy and already getting dark when I left at around 4:30pm. Overall, it’s a nice afternoon tea and definitely a good opportunity to meet people. To meet people doesn’t necessarily mean to get to know anyone, but it was great having nice talks, and I’m happy with that.

To celebrate a special memorial day. Seems related to something 500 years ago, and a Scottish hero...I'm not sure.

Sunny weekend

I had a fruitless Saturday and felt somehow guilty. Now it's Sunday and I'm in the computer room doing the compulsory reading on International Relations. Those articles are interesting if you could really digest, and you could even have your own opinion formed after sufficient reading and thinking as well.

The problem of me is that I'm toooooo easily distracted. Like now, I should be reading that article named 'The State of State' while I just saundered around online to see my favorite website and finally I arrived here to start this piece of blog.  Am I just hopeless? Now think about the overdraft charge (this has haunted me for days), the reason I'm thinking about it again is that a college classmate told me by leaving a message on my msn space that if I go to talk to the agent that helped me to open that account, I might be able to have the charge waived. Without this piece of information, I'd have forgotten about that at all. Well, since I need to go to the bank on Monday anyway, I'll see. Maybe I'll talk to someone or maybe not. Anyway, I've learned my lesson. NEVER TAKE EVEN THE TINIEST POSSIBLE ADVANTAGES FOR GRANTED. THOSE BUSINESS PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS OUTWIT YOU. And never try to take advantages out of other people either. For, in that case, YOU WILL DEFINATELY LOSE MUCH MORE THAN YOU GAIN.

They do things inefficiently. But why are they among the most developed countries?
It is personality that matters. People could always buy skills and knowledge.
Be good to yourself and then you can be good to other people.
Anything easily obtained won’t make you really happy.

Had a good time!

I had a good time this afternoon with a friend Maria. We went to the beach with two other girls, Stefen and Ricala, and spent a couple of hours walking on the soft sand and watching the sea waves. The sea was soothing as always. I felt relaxed and happy with Maria. I should have brought my camera, for there were a lot of beautiful sceneries on the way and the beach as well.  Next time I will…Maria picked up a few shells but later she “set them free”, those shells looked like butterfly wings, with patterns in blue and black. A few dogs were also running and playing on the beach with their masters, and would stop by your side for petting, happy to receive people’s attention.

We could see the lake where the river Don forms before running into sea. The River Don is small and meek, so there is no alluvial delta formed. The lake and the sea just meet and melt seamlessly. A few swans were floating on the lake water, gracefully flapping their wings, a peaceful picture. We were both speaking a foreign language and we were making different kinds of mistakes, but we could understand each other well anyway. It is more interesting, also less stressful than when you are talking with a native English speaker.

Maria stays in a catered accommodation hall but I just knew today that they only have brunch provided on Sundays. Since she didn’t like the food in the India Café in our halls, I suggested that we cook together at my place, for I’m staying in self-catered and we have a kitchen and all the appliances, and I’ve got a lot of foodstuff as well. Maria was surprisingly good at cooking. She could chop vegetable very fast and nicely. And the spaghetti sauce she made was amazingly good. She simply used carrots, a half onion, bottled spaghetti sauce and some celery, and it tasted great, with the celery still crunchy. We also boiled some broccoli, and ended up eating a lot of food. That’s what hungry people do with delicious food, hehe. I should have taken a picture of the food, too, they were pretty dishes before eating, oh well…

Diary

This morning one programme leader suggested to all the international students in the business school that we'd better write something in English each day to improve our writing skills, which would be very important for the dissertation by the end of the programme. I think it's a good piece of advice, and I'm going to take it seriously.

So I got this today (you may call it a diary, or babbling):

Before I came here I heard that Scottish people are friendlier than people in England. I haven’t got any chance to compare yet, and people at Heathrow airport in London were also friendly anyway, therefore I guess I’m leaving this issue to my own eyes. Well, so far most people are friendly and helpful, and due to the variety of nationalities of students in the University of Aberdeen (up to 120, which also added an international tone to this city), people here are used to seeing foreigners and getting along as well.

Aberdeen
is a city with a long history. You could also see this from the ancient buildings scattered everywhere, from along streets in the city center, to the campus of our university. Most old buildings are still in use and have been protected well, at least still good with their functions. This is so different to the fate of most old buildings in China. But maybe different construction material and style which define the duration of buildings, along with different national status of big or not-so-big population hence different efficiency of land utilization, make the fate of the ancient buildings different after all. I guess that the social awareness of culture preservation also plays a role in it. This might turn out to be something hard to maintain for countries with too many disasters in the past hundred years. A pity that I felt for my country, but a pity is just a sigh to gone with the wind; there’s no need to cry over spilled milk. We’ll march on despite all that.

Different communities, the university itself, along with some companies such as local mobile service companies and food stores, came up with various ways to greet the new comers. Hence we got a fresher’s week bombarded with a lot of information. If you don’t want to miss a thing, you’d better keep your eyes open all the time for each single piece of information-loaded flyer or whatsoever. These dinners, tours, speeches and parties did pretty well in helping people to settle in, only that you don’t have to attend them all, which will be truly exhausting. Too much information would also be confusing, and I just missed the international advising yesterday for I simply didn’t see that page in the schedule sheets. Oh well. At least I didn’t miss the more important induction today, which revealed useful information on how to use the library, internet and online database, student support service and career service. I still need to go over the new information I got today. And I got my student ID card today, finally.

I’m good at recording boring events of the day to compose a diary. In case it gets really boring, I think I’d better call it a day.
